Bruce Lee left an undying legacy as a martial artist, actor, and innovator. He is one of the world’s most recognizable figures of all time and although he suffered an untimely death, his popularity continues to influence the world of martial arts, sports, and pop-culture. Bruce’s writings, phiilosophies, and life story have been the inspiration for a myriad of documentaries, action films, and works of arts and music. His influence continues to be a beacon for those studying martial arts, maintaining his martial art of Jeet Kune Do and the legacy it entails.
Shannon Lee is the only daughter of Bruce and Linda Lee. She is also the only sibling to Brandon Lee, the only son of Bruce Lee, and she protects the legacy of her father as the President of the Bruce Lee Foundation. Shannon is an actor, singer, martial arts practitioner, and businesswoman.
Shannon started the Bruce Lee podcast in 2021, with the mission to share her father's wisdom and philosophy with martial artists, creatives, and the world in general. The podcast has showcased over 200 episodes and has featured a myriad of martial artists, actors, and people of influence. Here's a link to my favorite quote by Bruce Lee and the episode that examines those words:
The episode ‘Be Water’ has many layers of information and influence. Shannon Lee unpacks her definition of what her father, Bruce, was trying to emote through his words. His philosophies and writings are, at times, mystically encode information that is sure to convey an immediate and enduring dialogue. As a long-time practitioner of the martial arts, Bruce Lee’s martial philosophies have inspired my instruction, on and off the mat. Over time, I have been able to find further meaning of Lee’s quotes, which has allowed me to further unpack the knowledge-laden information of his legacy. ‘Be Water’ is not just a quote, but a roadmap to self-discovery.
THE GUARDIAN - AUGUST 1, 2016
The famously quoted statement, "be water, my friend," credited to Bruce Lee, arose in 1971 during an interview on the Pierre Berton Show. The quotation is part of Bruce Lee's wider philosophical statement, wherein he emphasizes adaptability, fluidity, and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances.
